As Sweet &Maxwell all lawyers know the Thomson group and having acquired the Practical LAw business they are now market leaders for legal and professional publishing in the UK. This report summarises their strategic positions across news and research publishing (Westlaw), transactional support (PLC), Accountancy (Digita) and legal IT (Elite/Lawsoft). The PLC acquisition was transformational of their prospects and the group now has over 50% of its business in the UK in high growth sectors and business lines. Few competitors can say the same. The Elite software brand in the UK is well known as the leading independent practice management suite for global and larger law firms. Since 2011 the group in the UK also now comprises FWBS/Pericom, Flosuite and Pilgrim brands (as well as Solcara). As such they are the largest group currently for practice, case and matter management solutions for law firms - predominantly large firms, but with a credible presence among medium and some smaller firms also.
